Surface Resistance multiplied times the thickness of the material in centimeters, equals the volume resistivity.

Volume Resistivity vs. Volume Conductivity

Volume Resistivity is also called bulk resistivity because it is the inherent resistance of a semiconductive material independent of shape or thickness. Very simply, resistivity is the inverse of conductivity. Volume Resistivity is measured in Ohms-cm, or spoken as “ohms-centimeter” and Volume Conductivity is measured in S/cm, or spoken as “Siemen per centimeter”. Therefore, a Volume Resistivity of 500 ohm-cm is equal to a Volume Conductivity of 1/500 or 0.002 S/cm.

Volume Resistivity vs. Surface (or Sheet) Resistivity

Surface Resistivity (also called Sheet Resistivity) is expressed as Ohms/sq, spoken as “ohms-per-square”. It is a useful measurement when measuring a layer or thin film of a semiconductive material such as LINQSTAT as the surface resistance of a given material will change depending on the thickness of the layer. Surface Resistance (ohms-per-square) multiplied times the thickness of the material in centimeters, equals the volume resistivity (ohms-cm). Likewise, the Volume Resistivity divided by the thickness in centimeters equals the surface resistivity.

Therefore, looking at the LINQSTAT VCF materials, the surface resistivity of each material can be determined based on the thickness of the film and the volume resistivity (<500 ohm-cm)

• VCF-2xxxxS-Series: 500 ohm-cm / 2mil (0.00508cm) = 98,425 ohms/square
• VCF-4xxxxS-Series: 500 ohm-cm / 4mil (0.01016cm) = 49,213 ohms/square
• VCF-8xxxxS-Series: 500 ohm-cm / 8mil (0.02032cm) = 24,606 ohms/square

Why does CAPLINQ give “less than” values (ie. <500 Ohm-cm) instead of Typical Values?

LINQSTAT Volume Conductive Film is a carbon-loaded polyethylene. As such, there are necessarily some differences in the conductivity over the entire surface. The data that CAPLINQ provides is meant to be a minimum, repeatable value that can be used in the design of the final product.

LINQSTAT VCF as a Vapor Barrier

The purpose of a vapor barrier is to stop the warm moist air from condensing on the cool concrete walls. This is accomplished by installing the vapor barrier to the warm (inside) side of the insulation. Without a vapor barrier, water vapor flows through the insulation and if the concrete wall is cold enough, the water vapor condenses on the concrete, drips down the wall and causes mildew, mold, rot, and water stains. In a basement, a continuous vapor barrier – minimum 4mil thick sheeting over unfaced insulation is recommended. LINQSTAT Volume-Conductive Film is a carbon-filled polyolefin. To the layman, this means that it is a plastic that is filled with carbon powder. If you didn’t know any better, the plastic looks like black, garbage-bag plastic. Our standard VCF-40036S/2 is thicker than a garbage bag (1mil (0.025mm) thick for the garbage bag vs. 4mil (0.1mm) thick for the VCF-40036S/2) and feels more like heavy-duty plastic sheeting. Even thicker plastic (which provides no more vapor protection but doubles the EMI/RFI shielding capabilities) is available in our 8-mil (0.2mm) grade (LINQSTAT VCF-80036S/2). LINQSTAT as an EMI/RFI Radiation Shield

Both 4mil (0.1mm) thick LINQSTAT VCF-40036S/2 and 8mil (0.2mm) thick LINQSTAT VCF-80036S/2 provide adequate vapor barrier protection, but the latter is twice as thick and therefore provides nearly 2 times the shielding strength. A minimum of 4mil (0.1mm) thickness is recommended, and 8mil (0.2mm) thick VCF plastic is optional depending on the level of EMI/RF Radiation shielding desired.

LINQSTAT is a cost-effective solution

With the LINQSTAT VCF-40036S/2 (the 4mil version) at $100.80 per 36in. x 150ft roll (minus discounts for multiple rolls) this works out to less than $2.50 per square meter (less than $0.25/sq.ft). The LINQSTAT VCF-80036S/2 (the 8 mil version) is $187.50 per 36in. x 150ft roll (minus discounts for multiple rolls) and works out to less than $4.50 per square meter (less than $0.42/sq.ft). Compare these to other solutions and you will find that they quickly climb from $7/sq.ft. to over $45/sq.ft. Using a simple laminator, two 4mil sheets of Linqstat volume conductive film material (a 3M Velostat Alternative) are laminated together to form a single 8mil film.  This can be done if only 4mil sheets are available, or if smaller quantities of 8mil sheeting is desired.

It is most often used in the ordnance industry (an industry that deals with military equipment, specifically weapons and ammunitions) as waste container liners. It’s easy to understand that ignitable ammunition and static charges don’t mix well, so these LINQSTAT bags are great for these applications.

Granted, we do sell some of the LINQSTAT to prevent alien abductions, but that’s just us doing our bit to save the planet. “You sure can!” is the reply I got recently from a process engineer.  Upon further discussion, he gave me some tips that I have included here as a guidelines.  Hopefully they serve others as well as they have served me.

It turns out that the price of the LINQSTAT volume conductive film are heavily influenced by two specific attributes of the roll and there is one attribute that has marginal effect on the product cost.  These three elements are as follows:

1. The thickness of the roll
2. The length of the roll and
3. The width of the roll (ie. the slitting of the rolls)

LINQSTAT Roll Thickness
The most popular thickness for the rolls of volume conductive film is 4mil (102µm), but this normally makes it only the most readily available, not necessarily the cheapest.  2 mil (50µm) and 3mil (76µm) film thicknesses are also possible, and since the product (and the shipping costs) are dependent on the amount of material used, 2mil and 3mil will be cheaper than the 4 mil.

Though you will need to contact a sales representative for an actual quotation, a close approximation is that the 3mil thick LINQSTAT will be about 10% cheaper than the 4mil thick version and the 2 mil is about 15% cheaper than the 4mil thick version.

Yes, some of the properties will vary depending on the thickness used, but if you can test a thinner version and it works for you, then start enjoying the savings.

LINQSTAT Roll Length
The loading and unloading of the rolls is a manual process, but once the machine is running, there are very few extra costs associated and the discounts that CAPLINQ gets from this can be passed on diretcly to the customer.

Assuming you need to have 150′ (46m) lengths, you will pay a premium to have them delivered in such (relatively) short lengths.  In widths wider than a couple inches, these rolls can also be supplied in lengths up to 1500′ (457m).  Granted that these lengths can be more cumbersome to handle, but if the operators and machines can handle it, why not take the savings.

To give you an idea, (though again you should contact a sales representative for an official quotation), a 1500′ roll is about 35% cheaper than a 150′ roll of the same product.  Elements to consider for this are the loading and unloading of the rolls, the individual cores needed for each roll (and end caps) and individual packaging of the rolls in static-free bags.

To give you a better idea of what we’re talking about let me give you an example to show you the differences:

Of course, if 1500′ is not possible, you can go shorter (750′, 500′ or even 250′) and there will be a little savings in each roll length longer than the original 150′.

LINQSTAT Roll Width (ie. the slitting of the rolls)
As it turns out, there is very little effect on pricing if the roll widths are longer or shorter.  The slitting time is relatively short and does not play a large roll in determining the final product price.

Q1. What does it mean that the LINQSTAT VCF film is unaffected by age and humidity?

A1. This means that regardless of the humidity (up to 100% RH) and over the entire life of the product, there is no change in the volume conductivity of the black tape. This is a property of the tape itself. This means that even submerged underwater, the product maintains its conductivity.

Q2. What does it mean that there is “slow-attack” from Ketones?

A2. Ketones are chemical solvents, namely Acetone and MEK. This means that with constant contact (ie. submerged) there is a degradation of the material over time. This product is not suitable for continuous contact with acetone (ketones).

Q3. What does it mean that there is a “slow-attack” from Alkalines?

A3. An alkaline is a basic product (with pH greater than 7) and is the opposite of an acid (pH less than 7). A “weak” alkaline means the pH is not very far from 7 (ie. 7.2, 7.4) Stronger basic solutions would be higher than this from 7. With direct contact with alkalines, there is an attack of the plastic.

For many applications, such as the use as an interleaver for smartcards or for the packaging of electronics goods, neither of these points is an issue.

A direct equivalent to 3M Velostat (read the article on generic brands here), Linqstat VCF is a very low cost (up to 50% cheaper than 3M Velostat), volume conductive film for EMF shielding.

What’s the difference between volume conductive and just conductive?

Like it’s 3M Velostat equivalent, LINQSTAT VCF is a carbon impregnated black polyethylene film. The carbon impregnation gives it a volume conductivity that fends off EMF, but cannot be used to conduct electricity. Though an electrically conductive medium (such as tin or silver) could also be used for EMF shielding, these materials are many times more expensive and just simply not necessary for EMF Shielding or ESD (electro-static discharge) prevention.

The most cost-effective solution is with LINQSTAT VCF is 72″ wide x 150′ long rolls

The conductivity is not affected by aging or humidity and with a volume resistivity of <500 Ohms/cm and a surface resistivity of <31,000 ohms/cm² (click here for technical datasheet in Adobe PDF) the LINQSTAT VCF is an excellent conductor for a plastic.

How thick is thick enough?

Though the LINQSTAT VCF is available in various thicknesses, the normal thickness of 4mil (100µm or 0.004″) is recommended For extra toughness, heavy duty 8mil (200µm or 0.008″) thickness can be used, but the thickness implies more material which is more expensive, and shipping costs roughly double since the weight of the material is also doubled. If you really want to use 8mil thicknesses in some areas, then we recommend to simply put two layers of 4mil thickness instead. It’s much more cost-effective.

How else can I can it more cost-effective?

Certainly for large covering jobs like EMF shielding a room in your house, you can think of this like EMF wallpaper; the wider the sheets, the better. Standard rolls are available in 36″(0.91 m) width and 72″ (1.83 m) widths. If you’re wondering how the heck you can handle a 72″ wide roll, let me reassure you that these are supplied in what’s known as a V-sheet. A V-sheet is simply a sheet that is 72″ wide folded over on itself. Therefore a 72″ wide roll is actually folded over on itself and supplied as a 36″ wide roll.

Secondly, the length of the roll matters. Standard lengths are 150′ (46m) and 750′ (229 m). Therefore instead of ordering 5 rolls of 150′ length, a single roll of 750′ length will do. To summarize the above information, it is more cost-effective to order a single roll of V-sheet 72″ wide by 750′ long LINQSTAT VCF than to order 10 rolls of 36″ wide by 150′ long rolls.

Where else can it be used?

As discussed here, LINQSTAT VCF can be used to line walls, windows and floors, but because it can be heat-sealed, it is also great for wrapping electrical wires, telephone cords and computer cords too. For these applications, a special tubing version is available.
