Mold Cleaners for Thermosets and Thermoplastics

CAPLINQ offers a range of mold cleaners to allow your thermosets and thermoplastics molds to be cleaned thoroughly before starting a new production batch. There are three choices of techniques for cleaning your molds, including:

  • Compression-mold rubber cleaning sheets
  • Transfer-grade melamine mold cleaning products
  • Compression-grade melamine mold cleaning products

Each of these has their own advantages and disadvantages, but, when used correctly they all are capable of cleaning your molds. When used in combination, they may be even more efficient than one method alone. The cleaning process is achieved by the use of chemical and/or mechanical scrubbing.

It is important to make sure that the mold is thoroughly cleaned before startup of molding to ensure good molding results.

Application of Mold Cleaners

Procedure for Cleaning with Rubber Sheets

  1. Use your standard molding conditions
  2. Place rubber sheets over the cavities and runners
  3. Close the mold and cure for 5 minutes
  4. When press opens, remove the cured sheets
  5. Check sheets and mold cavities for stain
  6. Repeat the above steps until the mold is completely clean & stains are no longer transferred to the rubber sheet
  7. Remove the residual rubber film with a shot of compression or transfer melamine

Procedure for Cleaning with Transfer Grade Melamine

  1. Use your standard molding conditions
  2. Use the same volume of melamine as molding compound (the specific gravity may be different)
  3. Mold at 170-180 °C for 5 minutes
  4. When the press opens, remove the cured parts and runners
  5. Inspect the parts and cavities for staining
  6. Repeat the above steps until the mold is completely clean and stains are no longer transferred to the cured molding compound

Procedure for Cleaning with Compression Grade Melamine

  1. Reduce the clamp pressure by at least 50% to avoid damaging the delicate positioning pins
  2. Place the melamine preforms over the cavities and runners
  3. Close mold and cure for 5 minutes
  4. When the press opens, remove the cured melamine
  5. Check melamine and mold cavities for stain
  6. Repeat the above steps until the mold is completely clean

Continue cleaning until the cleaning compound has removed all of the mold buildup and mold stain.

Mold cleaning and conditioning compounds must be compatible with your molding compound. Mold build-up and/or mold stain is a function of production time and the number of shots. Use the table in the learn more section to select the best cleaning method for your application.
