Mold Conditioners for Thermosets and Thermoplastics

CAPLINQ offers a range of mold conditioners to allow thermosets and thermoplastics to easily come out of the mold after molding. By using mold conditioners to condition and protect your mold you will increase the amount of shots your mold can be used before needing another cleaning cycle and increase your overall mold lifespan. There are four choices of techniques for conditioning your molds, including:

  • Compression-grade wax based mold conditioning sheets
  • Compression-grade melamine based mold conditioning products
  • Silicone based mold release sprays
  • Carnauba wax based mold release sprays

Each of these has their own advantages and disadvantages, but, when used correctly they all are capable of conditioning and protecting your molds. When used in combination, they may be even more efficient than one method alone.

Application of Mold Conditioners

Procedure for conditioning the mold using melamine compounds

The melamine cleans the mold down to the bare metal. It is necessary to have a layer of wax on the surface so that the mold compound will release from the mold.

Once the mold is clean, follow these steps:

  1. Set the press to standard processing parameters
  2. Prepare the mold by first lightly waxing with spray wax
  3. Then mold 3 to 5 shots of melamine conditioning compound using a curing cycle 2 to 3 times longer than normal
  4. The first three shots of standard molding compound should be cured 2 to 3 times longer than normal in order to insure that press equilibrium temperature and optimum release characteristics are achieved
  5. Then resume molding under normal process conditions.

Procedure for conditioning the mold using wax sheets

Once the mold is clean, follow these steps:

  1. Set the press to standard processing parameters
  2. Rip the wax sheets to the best size to be used in your mold
  3. Cover the mold with a generous amount of wax conditioning sheets
  4. Mold a shot of wax conditioning sheets using a regular curing cycle
  5. Repeat this conditioning process with 2 to 3 shots of wax conditioning sheets
  6. Then resume molding under normal process conditions

Using mold release sprays to condition your mold

In addition to melamine mold conditioning compounds and wax mold conditioning sheets mold release sprays can be used. Mold release sprays can be used in combination with the regular mold conditioning process to obtain even better results. They can also be used during your regular production to optimize the amount of shots that can be performed before needing a full cleaning and conditioning cycle again.
