New IATA shipping regulation for temperature data loggers

Temperature data loggers, also known as temperature monitor, is a portable measurement device that is capable of autonomously registration temperature over a defined period of time. The digital data can be retrieved, viewed and evaluated after it has been recorded.

CAPLINQ Smartlinq data loggers are the perfect solution for shipments of any temperature-sensitive product. Applications of USB temperature data loggers include:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Blood Transportation
  • Vaccines
  • Epoxies and Adhesives
  • Flowers, Plants & Trees
  • Varnishes

CAPLINQ Smartlinq data loggers contain lithium metal button cells, and lithium handling and shipping requires the following of specific shipping regulations defined by IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (IATA DGR).

The IATA DGR is a reliable source of shipping regulation to help to prepare and document dangerous air shipments. Recognized by the world’s airlines, the IATA DGR is an up-to-date, and user-friendly reference in the industry. In 2016, IATA released a new version to IATA lithium battery shipping regulations.

With the new updates in the regulation, the shipping of temperature data loggers can continue to be made in the same way up to 4 data loggers in the same package. When shipping more than 5 data loggers in the same package, the regulations applies that the package should be labeled. As you can read detailed below.

The new IATA shipping regulations applicable to CAPLINQ Smartlinq temperature data loggers are:

  • Up to 4 data loggers in 1 package: No restrictions and no labelling necessary
  • When packing 5 or more data loggers in 1 package: Labelling necessary on individual package. And, air waybill should have the compliance statement “Lithium metal batteries in compliance with Section II of PI 970”
  • When shipping more than 2 packages in 1 shipment containing between 1 to 5 data loggers per package: Labelling necessary on individual packages, and if used, on the outerbox (see image below) and air waybill should have the compliance statement “Lithium metal batteries in compliance with Section II of PI 970”.
