Additional Information

3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX Pneumatic Applicator

Air-powered dispensing of two-component 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives for higher-volume production and precision assembly environments.

The 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ EPX Pneumatic Applicator is an air-powered dispensing tool for two-component 3M™ Scotch-Weld™ Structural Adhesives packaged in Duo-Pak (DP) cartridges. Air pressure drives the dual pistons directly into the cartridge, applying equal and simultaneous pressure to both adhesive components and feeding them into the mixing nozzle (sold separately) where they are blended to the correct ratio before application. The applicator immediately reaches maximum pressure with no power lag, and an integrated regulator enables fine-tuning of flow rate to match adhesive viscosity and application requirements.

The pistol grip provides comfortable handling and precise control during dispensing, while the precision drip-free mechanism prevents unintended adhesive flow when the trigger is released. Three variants are available to cover small-format 50 mL cartridges, standard 400 mL cartridges, and large-format 490 mL cartridges, making the system scalable across different production volumes and adhesive formulations. Mixing nozzles are sold separately and must be matched to the cartridge size and mix ratio.

Air-driven dual pistons ensure accurate mix ratio throughout the dispense stroke

Compressed air drives both plunger rods simultaneously and with equal force into the Duo-Pak cartridge, maintaining the correct volumetric ratio of both adhesive components from start to finish of each dispense cycle. This eliminates ratio drift that can occur with manual applicators at higher viscosities or toward the end of large cartridges.

Integrated regulator provides fine control over dispensing flow rate

An integrated air pressure regulator allows the operator to adjust dispensing flow rate directly at the applicator without modifying the shop air supply. This enables fine-tuning to match the viscosity of the specific adhesive being dispensed and the bead size required for the application, improving consistency across different adhesive formulations.

Precision drip-free dispensing reduces waste and surface contamination

The applicator incorporates a drip-free dispensing mechanism that stops adhesive flow as soon as the trigger is released. This prevents unintended adhesive deposition between dispense cycles, reducing material waste, keeping the work area and adjacent surfaces clean, and improving bead placement accuracy in precise assembly tasks.

Immediate maximum pressure with no power lag

Unlike electric or battery-powered dispensers, the pneumatic applicator reaches full operating pressure instantly when the trigger is engaged. There is no warm-up period or lag before the adhesive begins flowing, enabling fast cycle times and consistent bead starts in high-pace production environments.

Ergonomic pistol grip for comfortable, precise handling

The pistol grip design provides comfortable handling during extended production use and gives the operator precise control over bead placement and trigger actuation. The balanced body reduces wrist strain during sustained dispensing tasks on assembly lines or in manufacturing cells where the applicator is in continuous use across a shift.

Three cartridge size variants for scalable production coverage

Variants are available for 50 mL, 400 mL, and 490 mL Duo-Pak cartridges, allowing the pneumatic applicator system to be matched to the adhesive volume requirements of different processes. Universal tray compatibility with the 3M manual applicator range also allows trays to be shared across both dispensing systems on the same production floor.

Pneumatic vs. Manual Dispensing: Where Each Fits

For two-component structural adhesive applications, the choice between pneumatic and manual dispensing directly affects throughput, operator fatigue, ratio consistency, and process repeatability. Pneumatic applicators are particularly well suited to production environments where adhesive is dispensed continuously, in large volumes, or in viscous formulations that require sustained force to drive through a static mixing nozzle.

Consistent ratio delivery regardless of adhesive viscosity

High-viscosity two-component adhesives can be difficult to dispense manually at a consistent rate, particularly toward the end of large cartridges. Air-driven pistons apply constant, regulated force independent of operator effort, ensuring the correct ratio is maintained across the full dispense stroke regardless of adhesive stiffness or cartridge fill level.

Reduced operator fatigue in sustained production use

Manual dispensing of large or high-viscosity cartridges over a full production shift places significant repetitive strain on operators. The pneumatic applicator transfers the dispensing effort to the compressed air system, allowing operators to focus on accurate bead placement without physical fatigue accumulating over the course of the shift.

Faster cycle times improve throughput on production lines

The instant pressure response and consistent flow rate of the pneumatic applicator allows operators to dispense adhesive beads faster and with greater repeatability than manual applicators, particularly for larger cartridge formats. This supports higher cycle frequencies without sacrificing bead consistency or ratio accuracy between parts.

Available Variants

Safe Use and Maintenance Considerations

Compressed-air-operated dispensing equipment requires consistent attention to safe operating procedures and routine maintenance to ensure reliable performance, operator safety, and accurate adhesive ratio delivery.

Safe Handling During Operation

  • Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for the specific 3M Scotch-Weld adhesive being dispensed before starting work. Structural adhesives may require gloves, eye protection, and adequate ventilation.
  • Do not point the nozzle at people or direct dispensed adhesive toward skin or eyes during or after operation.
  • Connect the applicator only to a clean, dry, regulated compressed air supply within the pressure range specified for the applicator. Overpressure can damage the applicator or cause uncontrolled adhesive flow.
  • Disconnect the air supply before loading or removing cartridges and before performing any maintenance on the applicator.
  • Dispense a short purge bead onto a waste surface at the start of each session before applying adhesive to the workpiece.
  • For industrial and occupational use only. Not for consumer sale or use.

Maintenance and Storage

  • After each use, leave the mixing nozzle in place on the cartridge to seal the outlet and protect the remaining adhesive. Replace with a new nozzle and purge before resuming dispensing.
  • Inspect the plunger rods and piston seals for adhesive contamination or wear before each use. Contaminated or damaged seals can affect ratio accuracy and should be replaced.
  • Check that the correct plunger is installed for the cartridge mix ratio before loading a new cartridge.
  • Drain condensation from air lines and filters regularly to prevent moisture from entering the applicator and affecting piston performance.
  • Store the applicator in a clean, dry location with the air supply disconnected when not in use. Do not store with a loaded cartridge under pressure.

Best Practices for Consistent Dispensing Performance

  • Set the integrated regulator to the lowest air pressure that provides the required dispensing flow rate. Higher pressure than necessary does not improve mix quality and increases wear on seals and pistons.
  • Always use original 3M Scotch-Weld EPX Mixing Nozzles matched to the cartridge size and mix ratio. Non-original or mismatched nozzles may affect metering accuracy and mixing consistency.
  • Replace the mixing nozzle any time the application is interrupted long enough for adhesive inside the nozzle to begin curing. Do not attempt to clear a cured nozzle by applying additional air pressure.
  • Ensure adhesive cartridges are at the recommended application temperature before connecting to the pneumatic applicator. Cold adhesive increases back-pressure and may require regulator adjustment to maintain correct flow.
  • For applications requiring in-process verification of mix quality, consider pairing the EPX Pneumatic Applicator with the 3M™ Adhesive Mix Monitor for real-time in-line mix quality monitoring.
